The Biggest World Cup Ever Is Coming — Here Is Everything You Need To Know

The Biggest World Cup Ever Is Coming — Here Is Everything You Need To Know

The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins on June 11, 2026. The final match will take place on July 19, 2026.

For the first time, the tournament will be hosted by three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Games will be played across 16 different cities.

For the first time ever, 48 teams will play in the World Cup. That is 16 more teams than in previous tournaments.

The teams are divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group move forward, along with the eight best teams that finish in third place. In total, 104 matches will be played over 39 days.

The opening match will take place at the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. It is the largest World Cup venue, with more than 87,500 seats. The final will be held at MetLife Stadium in New York and New Jersey.

Who Has Already Qualified?

So far, 42 out of 48 teams have secured their spots in the World Cup. They qualified through their regional tournaments. The remaining 6 spots will be decided this week and next.

Last 6 Spots — Being Decided Right Now

Europe (4 spots still open)

Sixteen European teams are competing for the final four spots. They are playing in four separate mini-tournaments. Each team must win two matches to qualify. The semi-finals are on March 26, and the finals are on March 31.

The biggest name still trying to qualify is Italy, a four-time World Cup champion. They face Northern Ireland on March 26. If Italy fails to qualify, it would be their third straight World Cup missed — a huge disappointment for such a major football nation.

Other teams fighting for these last European spots include Wales, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey, Denmark, Sweden, and Ireland.

Intercontinental Play-offs (2 spots open)

Six teams from different continents — Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname — are playing a small tournament in Mexico City to decide the final two World Cup spots.

Here is how it works:

  • New Caledonia vs Jamaica on March 26 or 27. The winner then faces DR Congo on March 31 for one spot.

  • Bolivia vs Suriname on March 26 or 27. The winner then faces Iraq on March 31 for the other spot.

By the end of March 31, all 48 teams in the World Cup will be officially confirmed.

The Biggest Story — Will Iran Play?

This is the most dramatic situation surrounding this World Cup.

How it started: The United States and Israel launched military strikes on Iran on February 28. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, was killed in those attacks. This started a war that is still going on.

Iran said no: Iran’s sports minister said the national team could “under no circumstances” take part in the World Cup. He said their leader had been assassinated and their players would not be safe traveling to America.

The problem: Iran was scheduled to play all three of their group games in the United States against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21 in Los Angeles, and against Egypt on June 26 in Seattle.

Iran’s position: The head of Iran’s football federation said they will “boycott America, but not the World Cup.” That means they want to play, but they refuse to step foot on American soil. They asked FIFA to move their matches to Mexico instead.

FIFA said no: FIFA rejected Iran’s request and said the schedule will not change. FIFA stated it is “looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule.”

Trump's View

President Trump said he does not care if Iran participates. He also said Iran’s national team would be welcome to compete, but then added that he could not guarantee their safety — which made the situation even more confusing.

Where It Stands Today

Iran has now confirmed that they will participate in the World Cup. They changed their earlier decision. However, the disagreement over where their matches will be played is still not fully resolved. Iran wants the games moved to Mexico, but FIFA says no. The situation remains tense.

A Possible Matchup

If Iran does participate and both Iran and the United States finish second in their groups, the two countries — which are currently at war — could end up facing each other in the knockout round in Dallas.

The USA — Host Nation Update

The United States is getting ready in a big way as the main host country.

USA coach Mauricio Pochettino has picked 26 players for warm-up matches against Belgium and Portugal this month. The team’s new Nike uniforms for the World Cup have already been shown on national television.

Some American host cities had worries about money for security and police at the stadiums, but those issues are now being sorted out one by one.

Neymar Left Out of Brazil

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has left Neymar off the national team for upcoming friendly matches against France and Croatia.

This is a big story. Neymar has struggled a lot with injuries, and at 34 years old, his dream of playing in the World Cup is looking less and less likely.

Canada Reveal New Kit

Canada has unveiled their brand new World Cup uniform, designed by Nike.

As one of the host countries playing at home, Canadian fans are extremely excited. This will be the biggest football moment in their country’s history.

Groups to Watch

Some of the most exciting groups already set include:

Group A — Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, and one UEFA play-off winner

Group F — Netherlands, Japan, Tunisia, and one UEFA play-off winner

Group I — France, Senegal, Norway, and one intercontinental play-off winner

Group K — Portugal, Uzbekistan, Colombia, and one intercontinental play-off winner

The Big Picture

This World Cup is unlike anything that has ever happened before. It is the biggest tournament ever — 48 teams, 104 games, three countries, 16 cities. And it is taking place while a real war is going on between one of the host nations and one of the participating teams.

Football has always been called the beautiful game. This summer, it will need to be something even bigger than that.

The last six teams will be confirmed by March 31. Stay tuned.
